Baby Stroller Safety Guide

Stroller shopping can be a bit overwhelming for parents, but no worries. We developed a simple baby stroller safety guide with helpful tips to help you purchase a safe, manageable and comfortable baby stroller for you and your baby.

Naturally, the safety of your child is always going to be your primary focus. You want your baby to experience a safe and comfortable ride in the stroller whether you are jogging through the park, shopping in the mall or taking a stroll around the block. When you are ready to make your purchase, keep these important safety tips in mind:

  • Wide Wheel Base - This will prevent the stroller from tipping over.
  • Durable, sturdy aluminum or metal frame - A strong frame and base to provide longlasting use and will hold up to wear and tear.
  • Dual Brake System - Look for a brake system where both back wheels lock individually in place.
  • 5 Point Harness Restraint System - A seat belt system that will hold baby in place comfortably and securely.

To further ensure your baby's safety, we also recommend you look for a JPMA certification seal on the product packaging. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, Inc. is an organization with a high level of safety standards and marks baby products with their seal of approval after the product undergoes their extensive testing.

Manageability is another important detail you don't want to overlook. A stroller with front swivel wheels and suspenion is easy to maneuver around turns, over curbs and delivers a smooth, comfortable ride.

Also look for a quick and easy folding mechanism and consider the weight of the stroller. Be sure you are able to quickly open and close the stroller and effortlessly lift the stroller.

Many strollers today come equipped with an adjustable and reclining seat which provides several seat positions, including fully reclining to accommodate a sleeping baby. Other nice features include, a removable and washable seat for easy cleaning and adjustable handles so taller parents don't find themselves hunched over while pushing the stroller.

Certain baby strollers also have optional accessories available. Here is a list of some of the basic accessories you might want to consider purchasing if the stroller doesn't already come with it:

  • Storage basket usually placed low on the stroller to avoid tipping.
  • Insect netting to protect the baby from insects when outside.
  • Plastic sheath covering to protect the baby from rain, wind and other weather elements.
  • Cup/bottle holder or attachable tray.

Again, some strollers come equipped with these accessories and others you may have to buy separately.

Once you make your baby stroller purchase, remember to complete and mail back the product registration card to the manufacturer; in the event there is a recall on your stroller, they can properly notify you.

Prevent a Baby Stroller Injury

Avoid your baby from having an accident or injury in the baby stroller by following these simple suggestions:

  • Carefully follow the manufacturers instructions when assembling the baby stroller; contact the manufacturer if there are missing parts or if you have any questions regarding the assembly of the stroller.
  • Periodically, check the baby stroller for loose screws and missing pieces and check the brakes.
  • Everytime you open your baby stroller, be sure the latches and hooks snap securely before placing the baby in the seat to avoid the stoller collapsing on the baby.
  • The baby stroller should have a restraint system or seat belt...use it! Prevent the baby from slipping out of the stroller and prevent your toddler from leaning over and falling out of the stroller.
  • Don't hang heavy bags and packages on the handles of the baby stroller to avoid tipping.
  • Lastly, never leave your baby unsupervised while in the baby stroller.

Think safety so you and your baby can enjoy a safe and comfortable stroller experience.
